Eggs & Cholesterol

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

Rocky downed those gross raw eggs in like 2 gulps. So how was he able to take down Drago all those years later without worrying about coronary artery disease?

Well, the cholesterol in the egg yolks actually did not increase his blood cholesterol.

No really. In a huge 2020 study by Dehghan et al, the authors concluded that “In 3 large international prospective studies including ∼177,000 individuals, 12,701 deaths, and 13,658 cardiovascular disease (CVD) events from 50 countries in 6 continents, we did not find significant associations between egg intake and blood lipids, mortality, or major CVD events.”

Ummmm so you’re telling me that everything I’ve ever heard is a lie? Yes, I’m telling you that. When you eat cholesterol, your body recognizes that you now have cholesterol and sees no reason to make more of it. In fact, eating healthy foods that are high in cholesterol, like eggs or lean meats, in the absence of sugar and trans fat, may cause your cholesterol to lower, as your body may see that you’re getting a ton of cholesterol and decide to make less. However, when you shame-eat a whole box of Waffle Crisp cereal in one sitting, the sugar consumed triggers a hormonal response that will indeed raise your cholesterol. Yes.. the “bad” cholesterol.

So if you’re going to judge Rocky for something, judge him for Rocky 5, not for eating egg yolks.
